Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Also known as: AEO

The practice of structuring your content so AI-powered platforms and voice assistants select it as the source for a direct answer, rather than just listing it in search results.

SEO taught marketers to rank. AEO teaches them to get quoted.

When someone asks ChatGPT a question, types a query into Perplexity, or triggers a Google AI Overview, the system scans indexed content, selects a source, and delivers a synthesized answer. That source selection is what AEO targets. The goal is not to appear on a list of 10 blue links. The goal is to be the content the AI chooses to pull from.

How it works

Answer engines evaluate content on clarity, structure, and authority. A 2,000-word article that buries its answer in paragraph 12 loses to a 600-word piece that puts a clean, direct response right after the question-format heading. The structural pattern matters: question as heading, concise answer immediately below (40 to 60 words), supporting context after. That pattern makes it easy for an AI system to extract and cite.

Schema markup (particularly FAQ and HowTo structured data) reinforces the signal. So does topical authority — a site that covers a subject across multiple related pages carries more weight than a single post on an unfamiliar domain.

Where teams stumble

Most organizations treat AEO as an SEO add-on: run the same keyword research, write the same long-form content, and hope the AI picks it up. That misses the point. SEO optimizes for ranking position. AEO optimizes for answer selection. Different objective, different execution.

The other common mistake is chasing one platform. A piece structured for Google AI Overviews may not match what Perplexity or ChatGPT prioritize. AEO that works targets the structural patterns all answer engines share — clear question-answer pairs, authoritative sourcing, concise direct responses — rather than reverse-engineering a single algorithm.

What to do first

Audit your highest-traffic content. For each page, ask: if an AI engine needed to answer the question this page addresses, could it extract a clean answer in under 60 words? If the answer is buried, restructure. If the page lacks a clear question-format heading, add one. Start with the 10 pages that drive the most organic traffic — those are the ones answer engines are already scanning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Search engines still drive the majority of web traffic. AEO addresses a new layer: the AI-generated answers that increasingly appear above or instead of traditional search results. Teams need both disciplines, not one or the other.

Which platforms does AEO target?

Any platform that generates direct answers from indexed content. That includes Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing Copilot, and voice assistants like Alexa and Siri. The list grows as more products adopt generative answer formats.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO focuses on getting your content selected as the direct answer to a specific question. GEO is broader — it covers how your brand, claims, and expertise surface across generative AI outputs, even when no single question is being answered.
